Mr Henderson's Walk” to Jimera de Libar is recommended. This is a
90minute (approx) walk along the valley following the course of the river and
railway. The views are beautiful. At some points you are just by the river and
at other times you are high up looking down into the valley. Many people
catch the train back to the village, often after a refreshing meal at the
local restaurant at the station (Querus).
You can also walk to the Cuevo del Gato in the opposite direction. This
walk takes you along the river again and there is hotel en-route where you
can stop for a coffee or a lovely lunch by the river. At the end
of the walk are the caves with a waterfall and an ice cold natural
lake to swim in. There is another small restaurant there for those that get
thirsty. The walk takes about half an hour and the flowers there are
particularly beautiful in the spring and summer.
For those with more energy could continue this walk onto Ronda!
There are many longer walks in the area. A book detailing many
walks written by a local resident is available in the house.
Pileta Caves The pileta caves are about a 20 minute drive away. The caves go a long
way underground and have some of the oldest cave paintings in Europe. The
underground chambers and lakes are fantastic.
Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil is a village that is built into the mountains. The houses
have brick fronts but the mountain forms the back of the houses. We would
recommend that you park near the top and then wander down to the
village. A market is held there on Friday morning.
Ronda Ronda is just a fifteen minute drive away or you van take the train. At
the centre of the town is a spectacular gorge. The views are fantastic. Ronda
also boasts one of the oldest bull rings in Spain. There are also many museums
and Moorish buildings. On a practical note there are several supermarkets in
the "industrial" area as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools,
internet cafes, restaurants and shops. There are plenty of underground car
parks which are well signposted. Sunday is also market day here on the
outskirts in the festival grounds (by the sports centre when you take the exit
road to Burgos)
Zahara The lake at Zarhara is wonderful. You should try to find the roaddown to the
lake by the turning to El Gastor from the Seville Road. After seeing the lake,
go on to the village of Zahara and climb upto the castle. The views are
amazing!
Gibraltar The drive to Gibraltar is well worth it. The natural park, Europa
point, siege tunnels, caves, cable car, Barbary apes,
canons.....Also cheap spirits and petrol! Please remember to take passports and
that you are limited to a litre of alcohol each. Some people prefer
to park at La Linea and walk across and then negotiate on the price of a
tour with one of the many licensed taxi minibuses. Please check that your hire
car allows you to drive in Gibraltar!
Lakes There are a number of beautiful lake that you can sunbathe by and swim
in close to Ardales. There are several reservoirs there along with some cafes
and restaurants. Some areas have pedaloes/canoes for hire.
Coast
The drive to the coast is spectacular and takes just over an hour.
There are many beautiful beaches - but lots of people! Be aware that although
the harbour at Puerto Banus is beautiful - check the prices of the
underground car park before you park. We managed to park in one that cost
nearly €20 for just three hours in 2006! Cities The cities of Granada,
Seville, Cordoba, and Jerez can all be visited in a day. We cannot do
justice to them by describing them here but would recommend that you research
this further!
